Secrets of Slovakia

CyclingFrom its walled gothic towns, rustic wooden churches, castles and chateaux to its peaceful green pastures, abundant forests, and majestic peaks, Slovakia offers a wealth of spectacular sights. Spending our first day in the vibrant Prague excellently balances against the remoteness of some places we are going to visit and is a feast for all city lovers. Our cycling adventure sets out from Pieniny National Park where you can raft on traditional wooden rafts down Cyclingthe biggest canyon in Central Europe, we cycle through the undulating countryside, quaint towns and villages set against the dramatic backdrop of the High Tatra mountains. En route we visit stunning Belianska cave, the impressive Orava castle spectacularly set atop a virtually inaccessible cliff, where Nosferatu - the very first vampire film was shot, and after cycling through Kremnica, a famous ‘golden' town with nearly seven centuries old continuously manufacturing mint, Cyclingwe stop in the medieval mining town of Banská Štiavnica. Here we leisurely enjoy its intimate atmosphere, surrounding lakes and stylish pubs. Pedalling across pastoral countryside, the second leg of our trip makes a loop back, touches the Slovak Paradise National Park and culminates in a visit to the gothic town of Levoča, one of the most charming towns of the trip, where you can admire the world's tallest wooden altar, and a visit to the monumental UNESCO Spiš castle, where our cycling ends.

Route rating:

Vigorous - cycling covers 30-50 miles (50-80 km) most days and as the Carpathian mountain system stretches across most of the Slovakian territory cycling is over predominantly hilly terrain. Our van provides an instant support for those opting to shorten their cycling however, for maximum enjoyment we recommend this trip to active people or regular cyclists who enjoy spending much of the day in the saddle.

Weather:

Slovakia has moderate continental climate. Prime visiting months are May through September with temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to the lower 80s (14 - 28°C). October is cooler, usually bringing first frosts in the mountain heights but also the most spectacular autumnal colours and often a beautiful Indian summer.
